I REMEMBER WHEN …
Based on: Ecclesiastes 2:1 =
“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them:” (KJV)
I remember when hop-scotch was in
We hop-scotched from dawn to dust
Making lagers from bobby pens
To skate keys, having fun
And, we didn’t even cuss.
I remember when we had simple fun
From little Sally Walker
Sitting in a saucer to
Playing gig-a-lean in a circle
If you know what I mean.
I remember when hide & seek
Was at its peak,
And spin the bottle was even
Played by our role models.
I remember when climbing trees,
Playing house, coloring books,
Paper dolls filled my days
With excitement and thrills,
Just thinking about it
Gives me chills.
I remember when along came TV
And changed things
As we knew them to be.
I remember when Beanie & Cecil,
The Lone Ranger and Sheriff John
Were the bombs.
I remember when roller skating
Was the thing to do
And the Savoy Skating Ring
Was the place to be
There were people, music,
And food galore
A person couldn’t ask for more.
I remember when American Bandstand
Had cool White people
That could really dance
And watching The Al Jarvis Show
Made your body want to
Dance, dance, dance.
I remember when the days
Were filled with pure & innocent fun
And when respect and comradery
Were demonstrated by almost
Everyone, and civility reigned supreme
If you know what I mean.
I remember when we had
Fried chicken after Church
And family and friends
Sitting, talking and laughing
On the front porch.
I remember when neighbors
Were only known
By their last names alone
For they actually helped
To raise the kids
In their neighborhoods
Even if it meant spanking
Their little behinds
To help make them mind.
I remember when neighbors
Were close friends
So close they seemed more
Like family than friends
Oh, what powerful communities
We had back then
When things were so simple
And easy to comprehend
Yes, I’m happy that
I grew-up back then
So, I can gladly say,
I Remember When …
(The Bottom Line)
